ESL Teacher

​PART TIME ESL INSTRUCTOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: ESL Instructor
Type: Part-time, contract, non-union
Program: Adult ESL
Reports to: Community Education Department, CCC
Position starts Winter term: 1/5/25

Hours: 4 hours per week, Fall, Winter and Spring terms

This position requires an evening work schedule to meet program needs.
The Canby ESL class currently meets Monday and Wednesday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

The Community Education Department at Clackamas Community College (CCC) collaborates with area school districts, park and recreation departments, adult community centers and community partners to offer quality, non-credit learning opportunities around the county. CCC partners with Bridging Cultures (BC) to provide local ESL classes for beginning-level and intermediate-level English learners. BC provides a welcoming and supporting atmosphere by providing a light meal, childcare and tutoring assistance for family and children of the adult students. BC coordinates volunteers, classroom tutors, and the meal, as well as recruits students and monitors student retention. The evening begins with a half-hour conversation time during the meal coordinated by BC, then followed by 1 1⁄2 hours of class time from 6:30 - 8 pm, on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Summary of Position:
Instructors will use a specific workbook designed by the Clackamas Community College to address appropriate Second Language stages, Career and College Readiness standards, and age-appropriate topics. Instructors will use the materials provided to organize lesson plans based on the needs of their students. The class will generally be taught in English with Spanish used to clarify information and help students as needed. Instructors of the ESL classes will provide guidance to the classroom volunteers who are available to help the students during practice portions of the class. Clackamas Community College, as the employer, may occasionally be on hand to observe and provide guidance.

Essential Job Functions:
To instruct and present the content of their courses in a professional and suitable manner. Create daily lesson plans from the provided curriculum.

Auxiliary Job Functions:
Exercise independent judgment in altering class material to meet the needs of the students. Communicate with BC’s ESL Coordinator on attendance, enrollment, and other logistical and administrative matters.

Qualifications:
Your education and/or work experience will demonstrate you meet the qualifications.

Preferred Education and Experience:
● Bachelor’s degree
● ESL or ABE experience with low-level literacy to upper-beginning levels. ● Volunteer instructional teaching or student teachers
● Alternative experience/educational training for adult or cultural classes ● Lived experience in/or thorough knowledge of Latine culture

Preferred Licenses
● Certificate in TESOL/TESL or MA TESOL from an accredited institution. ● Spanish language proficiency

Physical Demands of the position
● Lifting and carrying items such as boxes of supplies.
● Transporting boxes of supplies to and from storage space in the building. ● Lifting chairs from desks and lifting/moving classroom tables.

*This position is employed by Clackamas Community College, working onsite at Baker Prairie Middle School in Canby, OR.
